As the flagship activity of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the “Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage” of 1972 has been ratified by almost all states, and more than 900 sites in more than 150 countries have been inscribed on the prestigious World Heritage List whose rise in public consciousness has exceeded all expectations. World Heritage strongly influences conservation policies as also lay conceptions of culture the world over, yet at the same time, the inner workings of the World Heritage system remain relatively opaque to outside observers.
